Caroll W. Dale
In the first ever Super Bowl in 1967, Carroll Dale caught a third-down pass from Bart Starr for a 64-yard touchdown, but it did not count when an official ruled that Green Bay’s left tackle was in motion before the play. Three years later, Dale again found himself in the end zonethis time it was at the Pro Bowl and it counted as the game-winning touchdown.
Dale attended Virginia Tech from 1956 to 1959 and has been called as one of the finest ever to play at Blacksburg. He played in 40 consecutive games as both offensive and defensive end. He missed only two practice sessions in his four years at Tech and was the fastest on the Gobbler squad. In 1959, Dale was named team captain as a senior and finished with a career total of 67 receptions, 15 touchdowns and a high average of 17.8 yards per catch.
Dale was named to the Look First Team All-American team in 1959 and to the Newspaper Enterprises Association 2nd team in both 1958 and 1959. In 1958, he received the Jacob’s Blocking Trophy and was named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Dale was All Southern Conference in 1958 and 1959, and was named Lineman of the Year by the Roanoke Touchdown Club for three consecutive years. In 1959, the Norfolk Sports Club named him Player of the Year, and the Bedford Sports Club named him Sportsmanship Winner.
His professional football career began in 1960 with the NFL Los Angeles Rams; Dale scored a touchdown on a 57-yard pass in his very first game. After playing five seasons with the Rams, he was traded to the Green Bay Packers, where he played for Vince Lombardi and was a starter on three consecutive championship teams. Dale and fellow Virginia Sports Hall of Famer Henry Jordan led the Packers to the first Super Bowl victory in NFL history. He was selected to play in the 1970 and 1971 Pro Bowl games.
