Archie Hahn
As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, Archie Hahn performed the astonishing feat of winning the 60, the 100 and the 200 meters at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. His success in athletics continued when Hahn became head track coach at Princeton University. Later in 1929, he joined the University of Virginia as head track coach, succeeding the legendary “Pop” Lannigan.
In addition to his duties as track coach, Hahn was also the athletic trainer at the University. He produced several stellar track and field men and Virginia record holders.
In his 22 years at Virginia, he posted a dual meet record of 56 wins, 42 losses and 1 tie. The track team in his first thirteen years at the helm won twelve state championships. Hahn produced winning relay teams at the famous Penn Relays during this time. One of his leading hurdlers, Captain Frank L. Fuller, III, set a world record in the 70 yard high hurdles with a time of 8.4 seconds.
