William H. Millsaps, Jr.
Bill Millsaps spent 39 years at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, including more than 11 as executive editor. Born in Daisy, Tenn., Millsaps joined The Times-Dispatch as a sports reporter in 1966. He became associate sports editor in 1972, executive sports editor in 1973, sports editor in 1977, managing editor in 1992 and executive editor in 1994.
One day while in high school he was marched to the principals office for a reason he did not know. The date was October 8, 1965. "Sit down, son,” said the principal, who also happened to be his father, pointing to a television, “you won't believe what Larsen is doing to the Dodgers." That was the moment Millsaps says a sports reporter was born.
In all, Millsaps worked as a sportswriter and columnist for over two decades, including serving 15 years as sports editor at the Times-Dispatch. He was an 11-time winner of the Virginia Sportswriter of the Year award.
Millsaps was inducted to the United States Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and was USBWA president in 1985-86. Millsaps is also a member of the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame.
