Bruce Smith Leads Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2005

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Bruce Smith, the all-time sacks leader in the National Football League, headlines an all-star line-up that will be the 2005 class of inductees into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Smith, a graduate of Virginia Tech, went on to amass 200 quarterback sacks during a 19-year career that included stints with the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.  He will be enshrined with four others who have had outstanding careers on the Virginia sports scene.

The complete VSHF Class of 2005 is:
Donna Andrews Six-time LPGA champion and two-time member of US Solheim Cup team
Steve Guback US Basketball Writers Hall of Fame inductee
Ted Keller Over 40-year career as collegiate coach and administrator
Bob Porterfield 12 year Major League pitcher with the Yankees, Senators, and Red Sox
Bruce Smith All-time NFL sack leader and three-time Defensive Player of the Year

The five will be inducted during the Hall's annual awards dinner in Portsmouth on April 23. The dinner will be part of Hall of Fame Weekend, this year celebrating the dedication of a new Hall of Fame facility.  Weekend events include a Gala Reception, Celebrity Golf Tournament and the Annual Induction Banquet.

Established in 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has been proud to honor Virginia’s contributions to the world of sports as the Commonwealth’s official sports hall and museum.  On April 22, 2005, the Hall will open it’s new 35,000 square-foot facility in Portsmouth, featuring an updated Hall of Honor, a dynamic digital theater, Campus Champions exhibits focused on Virginia’s colleges and universities, and the Game Time interactive hall with hands-on fun for the whole family.

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame was designed to pay tribute to those men and women who have made a lasting contribution to the cause of sports in Virginia, the nation, and the world through outstanding achievement or service. This includes athletes, coaches, administrators, and other contributors to the game.

Among other criteria, candidates for induction must have lived in Virginia for at least four years or must have achieved national or international recognition while attending a Virginia college or university.
