Construction Well Underway for the New Hall of Fame

The construction site for the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum continues to be full of activity under the direction of general contractor S.B. Ballard Construction Company. Structural foundations have been placed and structural steel erected, offering visitors a glimpse of the design and size of the building. An exterior highlight of the building will be the brick carvings by sculptor, Sue Landerman. Landerman has completed the carvings and they will be installed within the next two months as the brick veneer is laid on the exterior walls.

The interior framework, fire sprinkler, audio-visual, electrical and mechanical rough-in work has begun. The weatherproofing process has started, as the roof system shall be complete by the end of July and the exterior curtain wall windows should be placed around the end of August. The building should be completely weatherproofed by the end of September.

Below, you can see our progress through photographs. This new 35,000 square foot facility will be the most advanced of its kind in the nation, with state-of-the-art interactive exhibits, areas in which to play games and even test your racing skills. In addition to the entertainment value, the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame will afford everyone who visits the opportunity to gain an education in the importance of health, nutrition and exercise, and the characteristics of a champion, like teamwork, strength, determination and leadership.

Currently, we are scheduled to open our new Hall of Fame and Museum in early 2005. Just stay tuned to our website to keep up with our progress. We hope you will include Olde Towne Portsmouth and the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in your family’s vacation plans for 2005.
