Award Winning Firm is Well Known for Sports Displays
In 1999, a delegation from the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum visited the new Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Impressed with what they saw, they were inspired to move forward with plans for an exciting new facility in Portsmouth filled with interactive and educational exhibits. Little did the delegation know then that the exhibit designer for the Georgia museum, Gallagher & Associates, would be selected to fill the same role for the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
Based in Washington, D.C., Gallagher & Associates brings to the Virginia project an extensive list of sports credentials. Along with the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the firm has designed exhibits for the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in Nashville, the Traveling Exhibition for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Legends of the Game Museum and Learning Center in Arlington, Tex., and ESPN Sports & Technology Visitor Center in Hartford, Conn. The firm has also created numerous exhibits for Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian Institution.
“We’re delighted to have Gallagher & Associates as an integral part of our team,” says Eddie Webb, the Museum’s executive director. “Their design work is unparalleled, and their experience with sports exhibits will play a vital role in taking our new Hall of Fame to the next level.”
“What got us interested in the project,” explains Gallagher & Associates principal Terence W. Healy, “is that Virginia has a rich and unique sports history, and the Museum is the most prestigious place to inform people about this history.”
Gallagher & Associates is dedicated to creating meaningful and memorable visitor experiences. Its designers will translate this philosophy to the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum though high- and low-tech interactive displays and educational programs that can be conducted both in the Museum and offsite. Creating an interior that’s adaptive to fundraising and sponsorships was also an exhibit design skill required for the new Museum.
As principal in charge of the project, Patrick J. Gallagher is an award-winning designer who has worked on more than 60 exhibitions for museums, halls of fame, visitor centers, and entertainment centers around the world, including more than 20 for the Smithsonian Institution. A national lecturer in the field of exhibit design, Gallagher holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Northern Illinois University and in 1998 received the Washington Building Congress/Craftsmanship Award.
Healy, the project principal and design director, holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the University of Cincinnati and has been honored with the National Endowment for the Arts Presidential Award. He has designed exhibits and graphics for more than 65 projects and has been recognized for design excellence by the Society of Environmental Graphic Design, Washington Building Congress, and the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington.
Exhibits developed to date by the firm for the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame include: the interactive Hall of Honor, a tribute to Virginia’s greatest athletes; a 125-seat theatre; a Campus Champions gallery; the Health & Fitness gallery; and Game Time, a sports activity area.
Other exhibits and galleries will showcase Virginia high school sports, Virginia Olympians, current Virginia sports events and professional athletes, and the Media Desk.
