NEW HALL OF FAME OPENS AFTER DEDICATION CEREMONY TODAY

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Grand Opening ceremony was held today (Friday, April 22 at 11am) at the site of the new facility, 206 High Street in Downtown Portsmouth.  Following a brief dedication ceremony attended by dozens of inductees and special guests, the public was invited to experience the new Hall with no-cost admission offered until 1pm.

Featured among those joining the Grand Opening dedication was Virginia Senator George Allen, whose father is in the Hall.  Also included in the ribbon cutting ceremony were Ace Parker and Bill Dudley representing the first Hall of Fame class from 1972, and Bruce Smith representing the new class of 2005.

The Hall of Fame is the latest addition to the many high quality family attractions in Hampton Roads.  The 35,000 square-foot facility is located in Downtown Portsmouth, directly across from the Children’s Museum of Virginia.  The new Hall includes college sports, media, Olympic, golf and Redskins exhibits, hands-on baseball, basketball, football and soccer activities, interactive games and activities, and auto racing computer simulators.  The Hall’s Digital Theater features a 16-foot high-definition screen and will be a great place to learn about Virginia’s sports traditions and to watch special events and games live!

Meeting space in the new facility will include the 125 seat multi-media theater, classroom and boardroom space, as well as reception areas with an open exhibit hall that can accommodate small parties or receptions in excess of 500.

The Hall’s education programs offer SOL coordinated opportunities focusing on healthy lifestyles and character development as well as core subject connections.

The Hall’s new location is just a short walk from the Elizabeth River passenger ferry, the new Renaissance Hotel and Waterfront Conference Center, and the NTelos Harbor Pavilion, a riverfront amphitheater and performing arts center. The site borders downtown Portsmouth’s Olde Towne historic district and is just two blocks from the Museum’s former home, nineteenth century offices for the Norfolk County Courthouse.

Established in 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum has been proud to honor Virginia’s contributions to the world of sports as the Commonwealth’s official Hall of Fame.
