Markel Joins Winning Museum Team

(Portsmouth, VA) Although active in a number of charitable endeavors, Anthony Markel is selective when choosing a project to back. That’s why the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was proud when Markel chose to join our team by making a generous gift to the Capital Campaign.

Markel is president and chief operating officer of Markel Corporation, a publicly traded company that underwrites specialty insurance products and programs. Markel Corporation, founded in 1930 by Markel’s grandfather, is headquartered in Glen Allen, VA.

"I’ve been a supporter of athletic programs and facilities at the University of Virginia, and I have a great deal of respect for the collegiate athletic traditions of the commonwealth," Markel said. "As I learned more about the new Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and its positive messages about college athletic programs, I knew it was a project that I wanted to become part of."

Markel, a graduate of the University of Virginia’s McIntyre School of Commerce, has a long history of supporting UVA’s Athletic Foundation, the Cavaliers’ football and basketball teams and construction of Scott Stadium. Most recently, he has been serving on the Arena Executive Committee for the new John Paul Jones Arena, which is under construction and scheduled to open in 2006.

"I believe it’s important to provide student athletes, coaches and fans with outstanding facilities for sporting events," Markel explained. "The same is true for this new museum that’s dedicated to telling the story of Virginia’s sports champions. I’ve seen the plans for the building and the exhibits, and I’m very impressed with the emphasis on quality."

Markel began his career with the Markel Corporation in 1964. He was promoted to vice president in 1970 and assumed responsibility for the management of Markel’s whole-sale brokerage operation in 1975. He was named executive vice president in 1977, and to his current position as president and COO in 1992.

Markel has been a member of the board of the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines, serving as its president in 1983. He served as chairman of the Surplus Line Committee of the National Association of Independent Insurers in 1993 and has been on their Board of Governors since 1992. He is also a director for Hilb, Rogal & Hobbs Company, the world’s 10th largest insurance and risk management intermediary.

The Sports Hall of Fame welcomes this distinguished businessman and sports enthusiast to our growing team of supporters.
