UVa Wins 2004 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Achievement Award
(Portsmouth, VA) The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to honor the University of Virginia, as the recipient of the 2004 VSHF Division I Achievement Award. This marks the third time the Cavaliers have won the overall title. The award was presented during a ceremony on November 6th prior to the Cavaliers' varsity football game against Maryland.
Under the leadership of Athletic Director Craig Littlepage, Virginia won 64 percent of their intercollegiate athletic contests, including six conference titles for women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's soccer, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, and men's tennis.
Additionally, Virginia won national championships in women's lacrosse and women's rowing. And in football, the Cavaliers defeated Pittsburgh for the Continental Tire Bowl title.
Since 1996, the VSHF Achievement Awards have been presented to the Division One and College Division Institutions who achieve the highest overall winning percentages in intercollegiate athletics.
Established in 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has been proud to honor Virginia's contributions to the world of sports as the Commonwealth's official sports hall and museum. In April of 2005, the Hall will open its new 35,000 square-foot facility in Portsmouth, featuring an updated Hall of Honor, a dynamic digital theater, Campus Champions exhibits focused on Virginia's colleges and universities, and the Game Time interactive hall with hands-on fun for the whole family.
