VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT THE VIRGINIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Volunteer Guide
Duties: Greet visitors, answer questions, interpret exhibits, explain rules and procedures, and guide general visitors and school groups through museum.
Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must be outgoing and able to talk to visitors of all ages, including children. Must have excellent communication skills.
Availability: During school year, guides are needed Tuesday through Friday, 9 AM to 1PM. During the summer, guides are needed on weekdays, 9 AM to 1 PM and 1 to 5 PM.
Education Office Assistant
Duties: Prepare spreadsheets, answer emails, draft letters, organize mass mailings to schools, conduct Internet research, and answer phone calls as needed.
Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Have at least basic knowledge of Internet and MS Outlook, Excel, and Word. Must be self-motivated, organized, independent, personable, flexible, and willing to learn.
Availability: Year-round. Weekdays only. 2- to 4-hour shifts.
Boy & Girl Scouts Program Volunteer
Duties: Lead or assist with Scout Sundays programs (1:30 to 4 PM, one Sunday per month). Lead or assist with Scout Camp-Ins (one Saturday overnight per month).
Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Male and female volunteers needed. Must know (or be willing to learn) about scout badges/patches. Must like to work with children aged 6-12. Must be patient, energetic, and self-motivated. Teaching or childcare experience helpful.
Availability: September to May. Weekends only (see hours above).
Classroom Assistant
Duties: Assist in classroom setting with education programs that cover topics including fitness, nutrition, character development, physical sciences, civics, and history. Assist on museum floor with school field trip groups.
Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Must like to work with children ages 5-15. Must be patient, energetic, independent, flexible, and willing to train. Teaching or childcare experience helpful.
Availability: School year only. Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 AM to 1 PM.
Gift Shop Assistant
Duties: Assist customers with purchase decisions, create and maintain product displays, and help with re-stocking and inventory.
Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Must be responsible, trustworthy, and have good customer service skills. Retail experience preferred.
Availability: Year-round, during regular business hours, on an as-needed basis.
Office Assistant
Duties: Answer phone calls, assist with mass mailings, make copies, file paperwork, develop spreadsheets, and type letters. Will work with full-time staff members as well as interns.
Qualifications: Minimum age 15. Must have pleasant phone voice and experience with MS Word and Excel.
Availability: Year-round, on an as-needed basis. (Office assistant volunteers are placed on an on-call list.) 2- to 8-hour shifts.
Team & Birthday Party Coordinator
Duties: Greet party guests, collect payment, place food orders, explain rules and procedures to guests, provide extra help to guides while kids are playing in the museum, and work with party host throughout party.
Qualifications: Minimum age 15. Must be responsible, able to give instructions, friendly, dependable, organized, and must like children. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Availability: Year-round, Saturdays 10 AM to 6 PM and Sundays 12 to 4 PM.
Special Events Team
Duties: Special events volunteers will have a wide range of responsibilities, from set-up and break-down of events, to taking tickets and working registration tables, to showing guests around the museum. Events occur both on- and off-site.
Qualifications: Minimum age 15. Must be hard-working, dependable, mature, and assertive. Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
Availability: Year-round, mostly on evenings and weekends. Each month, a list of special-events opportunities will be provided to volunteers, who may sign up to work as many events as they choose.
Hall of Fame Programs Team
Duties: The Hall of Fame is putting together a team of volunteers to help develop new daytime programming for our visitors, to include kids’ crafts and story-time, adult wellness classes, and specialized group tours. The programs team will be responsible for both preparing programs (Internet research, brainstorming ideas, collecting materials, etc) and running them on the day-of.
Qualifications: Minimum age 15. Must be dedicated, responsible, and able to talk to visitors of all ages, including children. Artistic ability is a plus.
Availability: Organizational meetings will occur on one weeknight each month. Programs will occur year-round, on weekends during museum hours.
